Monroe Re-invents the Desktop Printing Calculator, Introduces New 8125.

97 years following its introduction of the first commercial calculator, Monroe announces the model 8125.  The desktop calculator has undergone dramatic change since 1912, from hand operated to electric, to electronic to electronic print/display.  Monroe’s new 8125 departs from the “me too” conventional wisdom by rethinking and redesigning the desktop printing calculator from the ground up. As the only calculator company in the world  working directly with end users, perhaps only they can re-invent the desktop printing calculator.

Levittown, PA.  18 May 2009 -- Monroe Systems for Business (http://www.monroe-systems.com) took the wraps off their new 8125 at the New Jersey Accounting, Business & Technology Show, May 7-8, 2009, Secaucus, NJ. The new model effectively re-invents the desktop printing calculator by clearly departing from conventional style and function. As the only calculator manufacturer working directly with end users, Monroe is uniquely equipped to understand how calculators are used and what users would like to see. This unique relationship with the actual user and their work coupled with Monroe’s in-house approach to specifying and developing proprietary products, is showcased in the 8125.

Monroe’s CEO, Dick Roberts, is hands on.  During the course of a year, Roberts attends 10 to 12 accounting oriented trade shows.  He demonstrates products and engages customers and visitors in dialog about their work and how a calculator could improve tasks routinely performed.  According to Roberts, “customers have asked for the calculator to take up less desktop space while not sacrificing the traditional attributes of Monroe’s heavy duty units”.  Further, states Roberts, “customers have complimented certain traditional Monroe features, but have asked that the features be expanded; two-column addition for example.”

In responding to customer input, Roberts collaborated with award winning industrial designer Josh Owen (http://www.joshowen.com).  Owen approached the design by researching current and past products on the market, understanding a user’s interaction with the product and clarifying Monroe’s expectations of the end product.  Essentially, Owen and Monroe threw out conventions and re-designed the calculator. The result of this collaboration has produced a 30% reduction in foot print. According to Roberts, “working with Josh Owen, has transformed the 8125 to functional desktop art. Smaller foot print and logical improvements in sight line to display and printer are obvious benefits.”

From a functional point of view, the 8125 boasts an array of pioneering features.  According to Roberts, commenting shortly after its debut in New Jersey; “it is gratifying to present a product and literally watch jaws drop in your audience.  Exciting to hear word spread within the exhibit hall and to leave the show with a brief case full of orders. Customers were impressed with the physical design and size of the 8125 and were amazed by some of the newest features like editing.”  Monroe is the first company to introduce editing on a printing calculator which includes the ability to scroll up or down, replace an incorrect entry, insert a missed figure, see the corrected total or reprint a corrected tape. Enhancements to two column addition comments Roberts “were judged spot on.”
